We recently received the donation of a very fine carte-de-visite album from a patron. The album, dated 1863, belonged to Joseph Henry Linnell, a Woburn leather manufacturer. Linnell served as a private in the 5th Massachusetts Regiment Company G (Woburn Mechanic Phalanx), enlisting on August 23, 1862 and mustering out on July 2, 1863. The album is full of photographic portraits of Woburnites, many of whom are identified. Some of the family names in the portraits include Grammar, Pollard, Pollock, Tay and Wood. There are also a couple of portraits of Woburn Civil War soldiers. The album is in beautiful condition with a hand tooled leather binding, ornate clasps and gilt edges. Many of the portrait subjects are identified, which is important for research purposes. Once processed, these images will be accessible for viewing in Digital Collections.
