Service Record:
George H. Ayer, a resident of South Boston who was employed as a carpenter, enlisted at age 27, on December 24, 1861, as a Private in the 1st Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers, Heavy Artillery, Company L, mustering in on the same day. He re-enlisted on Dec. 29, 1863 and was wounded on June 18, 1864 in Petersburg, Virgina. He was discharged for his wounds on July 12, 1865 as Sergeant.
