If you’ve been in to the Children’s Room, you’ve likely noticed — we have so much more technology than ever before! Here’s a short tour of what we have.
Self Check Out!
Staff can still check out your books to you, but you can check them out yourself as well. Each book, DVD, and audiobook has an RFID tag in it. You simply place your items in a stack on the pad or in our super cool robot and it will check them all out at once. It seems a bit like magic.
Computers and Printing
We have 10 computers in the Children’s Room which have internet access and printing capabilities. You must have a youth card (ages 18 and under) to use these computers. If you don’t have a card, you can have a youth guest pass to use for the day. Adults are welcome to borrow laptops from our laptop vending machine upstairs to use in the Children’s Room.
Do you need to print? Children have $3 of free printing per day. We have both black and white and color printing. If you need to scan, photocopy, or fax, you will need to go upstairs to the Business Center by the Reference Desk — but you will still have your $3 of free printing!
Early Literacy Stations
If you haven’t noticed, your children absolutely have — we have two special computers that have games on them. Learn more about these computers and AWE Learning on their website. They write:
The Early Literacy Station™ (ELS) is designed specifically for your youngest patrons ages 2-8 and features over 4,000 localized learning activities. The fun, interactive and engaging content spans all seven curricular areas: math, science & nature, social studies & geography, reading, art & music, writing & computer skills, and reference.
We particularly appreciate the color coded keyboard, small mouse, and the touchscreen, making these computers accessible while teaching important digital skills.
We have iPads that anyone with a library card can borrow for use in the Children’s Room. They are preloaded with educational and entertaining apps.
