Benjamin Franklin Smith, a resident of Salem and a carpenter, enlisted at age 25 with the 4th Battery Massachusetts Volunteer Light Artillery as Corporal on September 23, 1861, mustering in on November 17, 1861. He reenlisted on January 2, 1864 as Sergeant and was discharged on October 14, 1865 at New Orleans, Louisiana.
