Charles S. Converse, a resident of Woburn employed as an expressman, aged 40, was commisioned on Aug. 27, 1862 as 1st Lieutenant, in Company G, 5th Massachusetts Regiment Infantry, mustering in on September 16, 1862. He mustered out on July 2, 1863. At age 42, on July 25, 1864, he was comissioned as Captain, again in Company G, 5th Regiment Massachusetts Infantry, mustering in on July 27, 1864 and mustering out on Nov. 16, 1864.
