Stephen F. Hathway, a resident of Beverly, aged 27 and employed as a milkman, enlisted as a Private in Company C, Massachusetts 1st Heavy Artillery Regiment on August 6, 1862. He was promoted to Full 2nd Lieutenant on January 20, 1865. He mustered out on January 20, 1865 and was commissioned an officer in Company F, U.S. Colored Troops 36th Infantry Regiment on January 20, 1865. He was promoted to Full 1st Lieutenant on September 4, 1865 and promoted to Brevet Captain on March 13, 1865. He mustered out on October 28, 1866.
