John W. Nichols, a resident of Reading, MA, age 31, enlisted as a Private on Nov. 6, 1863 in Washington, D.C.in the 5th United States Cavalry, Company J. He was discharged on November 6, 1868 after his term expired. He reenlisted as a Sergeant on the same day, and again in Nov. 6, 1871. He was discharged on July 1, 1873 in Washington, D.C. Nichols had prior service in the 5th United States Cavalry as John Stoddard, from Nov. 1, 1858 to May 25, 1863, when he resigned as a 2d Lieutenant.
