Edmund C. Poland, a shoemaker, enlisted at age 20, on July 5, 1861, as a Private in the 1st Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Heavy Artillery, Company C, mustering in on the same day. He was wounded on May 19, 1864 in Spottsylvania, Virginia and mustered out on July 8, 1864 while absent wounded.
