Joseph W. Field, a resident of Salem employed as a shoemaker, enlisted at age 23, on April 15, 1861, as a Private in the 8th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, Company I (Salem Light Infantry), mustering in on April 30, 1861. He mustered out on August 1, 1861.
