Artist Statement

Sue Collins’ photographic practice is rooted in travel and an ongoing exploration of place, movement, and visual rhythm. Working across landscapes, architecture, and cultural detail, her images focus on moments of pause within environments shaped by history, human intention, and time. Rather than documenting destinations, Collins seeks quieter intersections where light, texture, and atmosphere create a sense of presence.

Her work reflects an attentiveness to space and stillness, allowing natural and built elements to exist in balance. Subtle contrasts between order and organic form, permanence and motion, recur throughout the work. Horses occasionally appear as symbols of instinct and calm, offering a living counterpoint within composed environments.

Collins’ perspective is informed by extensive travel, a background in historical preservation, and ongoing study at the Griffin Museum of Photography.

Biography

Sue Collins’ photographic practice is rooted in travel and an ongoing exploration of place, movement, and visual rhythm. Working across landscapes, architecture, and cultural detail, her images focus on moments of pause within environments shaped by history, human intention, and time. Rather than documenting destinations, Collins seeks quieter intersections where light, texture, and atmosphere create a sense of presence.

Sue Collins is a photographer based in Wakefield, Massachusetts, whose work is shaped by extensive travel and a long-standing interest in place, architecture, and visual storytelling. Her images often explore moments of stillness within landscapes, cultural environments, and built spaces, reflecting a sensitivity to light, texture, and atmosphere.

Prior to pursuing photography more fully, Collins worked in the construction industry with a focus on historical preservation, an experience that continues to influence her attention to structure, material, and spatial balance. She has traveled widely and has spent over twelve years leading women’s travel groups internationally, experiences that inform her understanding of cultural rhythm and the emotional experience of place.

Collins studies photography through ongoing critique and education, including participation in Atelier 40, a September–May intensive program at the Griffin Museum of Photography, as well as intensive weekend study with Eddie Solloway. Her work has been recognized with multiple awards, including Best of Show and Artist of the Month honors, and has been featured in regional exhibitions.
